Key takeaways
- Rankings change; the right method doesn't — cover, term, insurer, disclosures, riders.
- A slightly higher premium with a dependable insurer beats the cheapest quote.
- An advisor's shortlist of 2–3 honest options beats 50 comparison tabs.
Why 'best plan' lists mislead you
Most ranking articles are ads in disguise — they push whichever insurer pays them. The right term plan depends on your age, income, health, loans and family. A 28-year-old non-smoker and a 45-year-old with diabetes need completely different answers.
Instead of chasing a list, use the method below. It takes ten minutes and works for life.
The 5-point method
- 1. Cover: 10–15× annual income + loans + goals − savings. Under-insuring is the #1 mistake.
- 2. Term: until dependents are independent or you retire — usually 60–65.
- 3. Insurer: consistent high claim-settlement ratio, low complaint volumes, fast claim processing.
- 4. Disclosures: declare health, income and lifestyle fully — this protects your claim more than any brand.
- 5. Riders: only ones you need (accidental, critical illness, waiver of premium).
Term vs the plans agents push
Many buyers get steered toward endowment or ULIP plans because commissions are higher. For pure protection, term insurance gives 10–20× more cover per rupee. If someone pushes a 'savings plan' when you asked for protection, that's a red flag — and exactly what a free advisor call helps you see through.
What a good purchase looks like
You answer health and lifestyle questions honestly, the insurer does a medical check if needed, you receive the policy document, and you read it within the free-look period. Keep your nominee updated and your family informed about the policy.
