๐งฎ Free tool: SIP growth estimator
Illustrative projection at a constant assumed return. Mutual fund investments are subject to market risks; actual returns will vary.
Mutual funds, simply explained
A mutual fund pools money from thousands of investors and invests it professionally in a diversified basket of stocks, bonds or both. You own units of the fund; your money grows (or falls) with the basket.
Main types: equity funds (stocks โ higher risk, higher long-term growth potential), debt funds (bonds โ steadier, lower returns), hybrid funds (a mix), and ELSS (equity funds that also save tax under Section 80C).
SIP: the habit that builds wealth
A SIP invests a fixed amount automatically every month โ say โน5,000. You buy more units when markets fall and fewer when they rise, averaging your cost over time. No timing stress, no large lump sum needed.
Try the estimator above: even modest monthly SIPs compound into serious money over 10โ15 years. The two levers that matter most are starting early and staying invested.
SIP vs lumpsum โ which is better?
| SIP | Lumpsum | |
|---|---|---|
| How | Fixed amount monthly | One large amount at once |
| Timing risk | Lower โ cost averaging | Higher if markets are high |
| Best for | Salaried earners, beginners | Bonus, maturity, windfall |
| Discipline | Built-in | Needs willpower to stay put |
A common middle path: invest a lumpsum gradually via an STP (systematic transfer plan). An advisor helps you pick based on your amount, horizon and comfort with risk.
ELSS: invest and save tax
ELSS (Equity Linked Savings Scheme) funds qualify for deduction under Section 80C (up to โน1.5 lakh/year under the old regime) with the shortest lock-in among 80C options โ just 3 years.
They suit people comfortable with equity risk over the medium-to-long term. Under the new tax regime, 80C deductions generally don't apply โ an advisor helps you compare regimes.
How to start: the 4-step path
- Step 1 โ Define goal & horizon: retirement (20+ yrs), house (7 yrs), short-term (2 yrs)? Horizon decides equity exposure.
- Step 2 โ Complete KYC: one-time (PAN, Aadhaar); your advisor guides you.
- Step 3 โ Start a SIP in the right fund: diversified, matched to your risk โ often a simple index or large-cap fund for beginners.
- Step 4 โ Stay invested & review yearly: increase your SIP as income grows; review with your advisor.
5 costly beginner mistakes
- Chasing last year's best fund โ past performance doesn't repeat reliably
- Stopping SIPs in a crash โ that's when units are cheapest
- No emergency fund โ forcing you to redeem investments at the worst time
- Too many funds โ 2โ4 good funds beat 10 overlapping ones
- Investing without a goal โ horizon decides everything
