๐งฎ Free tool: how much term cover do you need?
Illustrative estimate using a common income-multiple method. An advisor gives you the precise figure, free.
Why term insurance comes first
If anyone depends on your income โ a spouse, children, ageing parents โ term insurance replaces that income if you're gone. A โน1 crore cover can cost a healthy 30-year-old less per month than a dinner out.
It should almost always come before investments. Protect the downside first, then grow your money. This is the foundation every financial plan is built on.
How much cover do you actually need?
A widely used starting point is 10โ15ร your annual income, plus outstanding loans, plus big future goals like children's education. Then subtract existing savings and cover.
Try the estimator above for a quick number โ then get it reviewed free. An advisor uses the precise 'human life value' or needs-analysis method for your exact figure.
Term vs whole life vs ULIP โ the honest comparison
| Term insurance | Whole life / endowment | ULIP | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cover per โน of premium | Very high | Low | Lowโmedium |
| Investment component | None โ pure protection | Yes, modest returns | Yes, market-linked |
| Best for | Maximum family protection | Forced saving + small cover | Goal-based investing + cover |
| Our take | Best for most earners | Understand returns first | Understand charges & lock-in |
For most people, the winning formula is: adequate term cover for protection + separate mutual fund SIPs for growth. Mixing the two usually gives you less of both.
Riders: useful or upsell?
Riders are add-ons to your term plan. A few genuinely add value: accidental death benefit (extra payout on accidental death), critical illness (lump sum on diagnosis of listed illnesses), and waiver of premium (future premiums waived if you're disabled).
Only add riders that fit your life. An advisor will tell you honestly which ones matter for you โ and which are just padding the premium.
The claim-settlement ratio โ and what matters more
The claim settlement ratio (CSR) tells you what share of claims an insurer paid. A consistently high CSR is a good sign โ but it's not the whole story. Claim speed, complaint records and, above all, your own honest disclosures decide whether your family's claim sails through.
Non-disclosure of health, income or lifestyle facts is the #1 reason genuine claims get rejected. An advisor makes sure your application is filled completely and correctly โ this is the most valuable part of the process.
5 costly mistakes to avoid
- Under-insuring โ buying โน25 lakh when your family needs โน1.5 crore
- Buying too late โ premiums rise with age and health issues
- Hiding health facts โ the fastest way to get a claim rejected
- Confusing insurance with investment โ ending up with too little of both
- Never reviewing โ a new loan or child changes your cover need
