What is claim settlement ratio?

One of the most quoted numbers in insurance — and one of the most misunderstood.

The simple definition

Claim settlement ratio (CSR) is the percentage of claims an insurer paid out of all claims it received in a year. A 98% CSR means 98 of every 100 claims were settled.

Why it matters, and its limits

A high CSR suggests reliability — useful for term insurance especially. But it's an average and doesn't tell you about claim speed, amount settled, or your specific situation. Read it alongside complaint data and reputation.

How to use it

Treat a strong, consistent CSR as one green flag among several. Honest disclosures at purchase matter far more for your own claim being paid.

Frequently asked questions

Generally yes for term insurance, but combine it with claim speed and honest disclosures — which decide your own claim.
Where do I find it?
Insurers and IRDAI publish it annually. An advisor can point you to current figures.
