Health insurance vs mediclaim

People use the words interchangeably, but they aren't quite the same. Here's the difference.

Mediclaim: hospitalisation cover

A traditional mediclaim policy reimburses hospitalisation expenses up to a fixed sum insured. It's focused and usually cheaper, but often narrower — with sub-limits and fewer extras.

Health insurance: broader protection

Modern health insurance plans tend to be wider — higher cover, day-care procedures, wellness benefits, and sometimes OPD or critical-illness add-ons. More comprehensive, sometimes pricier.

Which should you pick?

If budget is tight and you want core hospitalisation cover, a solid mediclaim works. For fuller protection, a comprehensive health plan (often base + top-up) is better. An advisor matches it to you.
